An extremely rare late Ming Dynasty Transitional ko-akae ritual altar dish on pedestal foot or 'offering bowl' of tazza form, with design of a peasant boy carrying bundles of brushwood beneath an ancient pine tree

Late Ming Dynasty, 17th century

19.1 cm bowl diameter;  7.3 cm high; 12.1cm pedestal base diameter

 

Description

Of extremely rare altar/offering bowl 'tazza' form, modelled as a shallow dish with angular sides raised on an elegantly flaring wide foot. The central panel decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, iron-red and green enamel with a rocky landscape featuring a peasant boy carrying bundles of brushwood beneath an ancient pine tree, encircled by an iron-red and underglaze blue ring to the cavetto, enclosed by a patterned border with four floral reserves on the steeply sloped sides, the quatrefoil rim dressed with iron-oxide brown enamel.

 

Condition

In superb original condition with no damage or restoration.

    A dish of identical 'Peasant Boy carrying Firewood' design sold at Tajan (France) 05 Dec 2022 'Arts of Asia' lot 8, titled "A ko-sometsuke porcelain and wucai enamel bowl, decorated with a central medallion of a peasant carrying faggots and walking among rocks under a pine tree, China for Japan, Wanli period, early 17th century".

     

    A dish of very similar design sold at Christie's (New York) 15 Dec 2015 'Exquisite Splendour: Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art' lot 14, titled "An iron-red and green enameled blue and white dish, Tianqi/Chongzhen period (1621-1644)".

     

    A dish of similar slightly later design with an almost identical border sold at Rob Michiels (Bruges) 03 Dec 2021 'Asian Arts' lot 424, titled "A Chinese wucai ko-sometsuke dish for the Japanese market, Transitional Period".
