A very fine late 18thc French Terracotta portrait plaque medallion,

depicting Louis XV of France,

by Jean-Baptiste Nini (1717-1786)

signed and dated 1770

TITLED: LUDOVICUS XV REX CHRISTIANISSIMUS - MDCCLXX

Signed: J B NINI F 1770 (incised on tranche)

 

This important cast terracotta plaque (terre de Chaumont) was created by "a technique of his own invention...Nini refined the local clay through a process of elutriation and used it to cast his medallions from finely engraved copper molds" (MET).

 

Measuring 15.9 cm (6 1/4 in) in diameter
